From Crisis to Stability: How WLP Helped Lisa Find a Safe Home

Lisa recently moved to an unfamiliar area and began a new job. She confided to her manager that she was having problems with her housing situation, so the manager put her in touch with Work Life Partnership.

When we spoke, Lisa explained that she is a single mom, and that her new landlord had taken several questionable actions, including removing the toilet and shower, and turning off the water and stove. Then he gave them a thirty-day eviction notice. Lisa said she and her children had been walking to a nearby gas station to use the restroom and showering at a gym.

Prior to reaching out to WorkLife, Lisa had contacted local legal services and several community resources without any luck. She was feeling overwhelmed, trying to focus on her new job but also desperately needing to find safe housing. Since she was new to the area, she didn’t know anyone who might offer her children and her a place to say.

Lisa spent her evenings trying to find a suitable place to rent, but the search was complicated because wouldn’t be receiving her first paycheck from the new job for several weeks. Recent automobile expenses had depleted her savings, leaving her without money to pay first month’s rent and security deposit.

Several WLP Navigators joined forces and found pro bono legal representation to help Lisa deal with the eviction. I contacted multiple community resources in Lisa’s area to secure rent assistance or temporary shelter. It took some time, but eventually we located an organization to provide Lisa with first month’s rent. She quickly found a new apartment, and expressed heartfelt thanks to WLP for helping her navigate a very difficult situation.
